Lufthansa strike and and other airline news

The hottest aviation-related topic that has made to the headlines these days is the strike of Lufthansa flight attendants. After the first round of the strike action on Friday, the UFO union annouces its members will resume strike.

The second round will affect Lufthansa‘s passengers on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. Just as was the case on Friday, the details will be provided 6 hours ahead of the walkout.

Skytrax, a company specializing in aviation research known for its yearly airline ranking, announced this year’s award winners. Qatar Airways defended its position as the best airline for for fourth consecutive year. Impressive given that the carrier was established only in 1993.

New airline routes and aviation news

Time for a dose of news from the aviation world. We start off this week’s post with the Polish flag carrier LOT Polish Airlines. Those of you who fly on the Warsaw – New York route may want to know that as of October 29, 2012, the service will be transferred from Airport Newark to John F. Kennedy Airport.

The Dutch-based leisure carrier Arkefly offers now seasonal flights to the popular Greek destination – Preveza. The Amsterdam – Preveza route is in operation until August 22, 2012. New airline routes and airport news

In today’s cocktail of news items from the world of aviation we start off with British Airways. This flag carrier of the United Kingdom extends two popular routes from London City to year-round services. The services in question are London – Palma and London – Ibiza.

The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair opens new base at Maastricht Airport in winter 2012. The carrier plans to offer 14 routes from its new base. Among them are Maastricht – Bari, Maastricht – Alicante or Maastricht – Faro.

Air traffic controllers & airline strikes

Dear fliers, you had better brace yourselves for a series of airline and traffic controller strikes – this time industrial actions will affect those who travel to and from Norway and Portugal.

Again, passengers are suffering the consequences of industrial actions on the strike-ridden Iberian peninsula. In the wake of a strike threat by air traffic controllers employed at the state-owned NAV, the Portuguese TAP Portugal has cancelled some 150 flights.

Ryanair to cancel its Greek flights

The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair is no stranger to conflicts with authorities whether it is EU or local governments. The latest in a series of frictions is between the airline and the Greek Islands and will lead to the airline slashing its schedule.

Among the routes Ryanair operates to Kos and Rhodes are such popular services as London – Rhodes, Liverpool – Rhodes or London – Kos.

Portugal strike will cause flight disruptions

May 17th, 2012

Travellers flying to and from Portugal in May are in for an unpleasant travelling experience due to the planned strike by Portuguese Air traffic controllers today, tomorrow as well as on May 24 and 25.

Today’s walk out is scheduled between 07:00-09:00, 14:00-16:00 and 21:00-23:00 whereas tomorrow’s action will last for 24 hours. The same pattern is likely to be the case in the upcoming strike actions later this month.
