Air traffic controllers & airline strikes

Dear fliers, you had better brace yourselves for a series of airline and traffic controller strikes – this time industrial actions will affect those who travel to and from Norway and Portugal.

Again, passengers are suffering the consequences of industrial actions on the strike-ridden Iberian peninsula. In the wake of a strike threat by air traffic controllers employed at the state-owned NAV, the Portuguese TAP Portugal has cancelled some 150 flights.

Portugal strike will cause flight disruptions

May 17th, 2012

Travellers flying to and from Portugal in May are in for an unpleasant travelling experience due to the planned strike by Portuguese Air traffic controllers today, tomorrow as well as on May 24 and 25.

Today’s walk out is scheduled between 07:00-09:00, 14:00-16:00 and 21:00-23:00 whereas tomorrow’s action will last for 24 hours. The same pattern is likely to be the case in the upcoming strike actions later this month.

The weekly update on new routes and services

Passengers on a Lufthansa flight heard the following announcement from the captain, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am sorry to inform you that we have lost power to all of our engines and will shortly crash into the ocean.” On noticing the growing nervousness among the passengers the captain added “Ladies and Gentlemen, we are prepared for such an emergency, and we would now like you to rearrange the way you are seating so that all the non-swimmers are on the right side of the plane, and all the swimmers are on the left side.”

The worst airlines world over

Some time ago we touched upon the subject of the most extreme airports in the world and today we’d like to take a look at some of the worst ranked airlines as ranked by both travellers and independent surveys. We won’t embark on any fully-fledged comparison but rather take a few examples.

By the way, it’s by no means an easy task to compare airlines. Low-cost airlines are a whole different story and we expect something different when flying with classical airlines.

Besides, how to measure the quality of different carriers? British Airways and TAP Portugal may well have one of the worst records in terms of lost baggage and flight delays but they rank better in other areas. Let’s take a look at how how professional bodies approach this issue.

TAP Portugal to start codeshare flights with Continental

October 11th, 2010

Continental Airlines and TAP Portugal announced that they would begin codeshare flights to a wide range of destinations in the United States, Central America, Europe and Africa. Continental will place its “CO” code on flights TAP operates between Newark Airport and Portugal, Spain, Germany, France, UK and on selected TAP-operated flights from Lisbon to Faro, Madeira and Oporto, and from Lisbon to Praia, Sal and Sao Tome.

At the same time, TAP will place its “TP” code on selected Continental-operated flights from New York to 20 destinations in the U.S.A. and Mexico and on trans-Atlantic flights from Lisbon to New York.  Details and timetable can be found at tap.com.
