LAN and TAM to create the top carrier of Latin America

Latin America’s biggest airline LAN Airlines and TAM decided to merger and create top airline in Latin America to be called LATAM Airlines. TAM has 63 destinations in 14 countries while LAN has 70 destinations in 17 countries.

LATAM Airlines should be based in Santiago and it would be the world’s 15th largest carrier providing services to 116 destinations in 23 countries. According to Caio Pereira Dias, an aviation analyst, the new company will be “a global player for sure”. Details can be found at

LAN to receive new Boeing 787 Dreamliner

LAN Airlines and its subsidiaries announced that the company signed an agreement with Boeing to adjust the delivery of ten Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners to be incorporated into the LAN’s long haul fleet. This new delivery schedule anticipates by three years the arrival of this aircraft, previously scheduled for 2014 and now expected starting in the first semester of 2011.

LAN becomes the first airline in the western hemisphere to receive the Dreamliner, which is expected to revolutionize the airline industry, incorporating the most advanced technology. These ten aircraft are part of the original order for 26 Boeing 787s placed by LAN in 2007 and previously scheduled for delivery between 2014 and 2019. LAN Ecuador to begin flights to the Galapagos Islands

March 22nd, 2010

LAN Ecuador, an affiliate of LAN Airlines announced that it would begin flights to the Galapagos Islands, offering a daily flight from Quito and Guayaquil starting next September.

During its first year of operation in Ecuador’s domestic market, the Company has flown more than half a million passengers on domestic routes, which include the cities of Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca. LAN Ecuador celebrates seven years of operations in the country, from where it also provides international connections to the United States, Europe, Chile and Argentina.

Santiago services suspended after earthquake

March 2nd, 2010

Operations by all airlines at oneworld hub Santiago Airport (SCL) were suspended throughout the weekend following the earthquake that hit Chile on Saturday. LAN, which uses Santiago Airport as its main base, is working with the authorities there to restore services as soon as possible.

    LAN launches service on its first Boeing 767-300

    April 9th, 2009

    LAN Airlines initiated the process of incorporating advanced technology devices, called winglets, in all of its Boeing 767-300 long range aircraft. An important part of the company’s fleet renovation plan, winglets create efficiencies and underscore the commitment to the environment. Winglets are placed on the wings of an aircraft facilitating a more efficient use of fuel. The reduction in usage equals approximately 450,000 tons of fuel per year which means about a 5% decrease in CO2 emissions for every aircraft.

    The winglets measure over 11 feet in length and are located at the ends of the wings. They are designed using the latest technology available that optimizes the aerodynamics of the aircraft and thereby, reduces fuel consumption.

    LAN Airlines celebrated 80 years of dedicated service to passangers and cargo customers

    LAN Airlines announced the company’s 80 th anniversary. Eighty years ago LAN began offering passengers and cargo clients stellar air transportation service. To commemorate this important milestone, celebrations will take place throughout the year.  Eighty years ago today, Commander Arturo Merino Benitez created this company in Chile, a national air transportation service provider that would one day become the leading Latin American airline.

    LAN and its affiliates in Chile, Peru, Argentina and Ecuador connect the region to Europe, the United States and the South Pacific. In addition to boasting an important air service provider status in each of the first three domestic markets named above, soon Ecuador will have this same standing.
