Qantas to start two Asian airlines

The competition on the Asian low-cost market is growing healthy to say the least and Qantas Airways newly announced plans to launch two new Asian airlines are just a part of the ever intensifying rivalry.

The recent times have seen a major investment by All Nippon Airways in two low-budget carriers, one of them being a joint-venture with Air Asia and the latter being a new carrier Peach Aviation Ltd. Moreover, AirAsia X opened new routes to Japan as well. Another player present on the Asian market is the Shanghai-based Spring Airlines.

The weekly update on new routes and services

Hi fliers! After a tiny break, our weekly preview of new routes and services is back. Today’s highlights feature as usually some various traditional carriers as well as low-cost airlines. Without further ado, we start off with Hawaiian Airlines.

It was with pomp and circumstance that Hawaiian Airlines opened its next transatlantic route from Honolulu to Osaka. It is not the first service to Japan from this Hawaiian carrier – the first one was launched to Airport Tokyo last year.

Volcanic ash causes disruptions again

It seems as though mother nature is getting ever more relentless and decided not to cease to cause troubles. This time it is the airlines operating to the popular leisure destination Bali and their passengers that have suffered from the whims of an Indonesian volcano Mount Bromo.

Among the affected airlines which had to cancel a number of flights to Bali are Jetstar, Virgin Blue and Cathay Pacific.

Jetstar: more international services from Melbourne Airport

Low cost airline Jetstar announced that it would commence a new daily A320 service from Melbourne to Auckland on December13,  2010. This is the sixth international destination serviced by Jetstar directly from its home base in Melbourne.

Jetstar announces interline agreement with Air Canada

Australia’s low fares airline Jetstar Airways has launched an interline agreement with Air Canada that will allow customers to connect their Jetstar domestic or international service with travel to or from destinations such as Vancouver, Toronto and Quebec City.

The new interline and ticket settlement agreement builds on Jetstar’s growing base of 11 interline airline partners established over the past twelve months that include Qantas, Etihad, Air Calin and Royal Jordanian. These international carrier relationships provide seamless booking and ticketing opportunities for customers and the travel industry giving more choices to combine a Jetstar flight into itineraries.

Air Asia X doubles flights from Melbourne

Low cost airline Air Asia X announced that it would increase its daily service from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur. The increased frequencies will double the current schedule of seven flights per week to fourteen from the beginning of July.

Other recent positive international announcements for Melbourne Airport have included Qatar Airways increasing capacity to daily and V Australia commencing services to Johannesburg following the success of Los Angeles and Phuket.  Additionally, the domestic market has seen Tiger Airways commence services to Brisbane and Jetstar increasing services to Cairns earlier this year.

Jetstar Airways launched 2 for 1 Japan Sale

Low cost airline Jetstar Airways announced new “2 for 1 Japan Sale”. Passengers who book two tickets pay for one only. Fares for two from AUD 329 one-way are applicable for flights to Tokyo and Osaka and can be booked online only.

Jetstar Holidays to sell NZ ski packages

Australia’s low fares airline Jetstar Airways has launched New Zealand ski packages as a new extension of its Jetstar Holidays offering. Jetstar is offering special Mt Hutt Ski Packages as part of the launch of the new ski holiday offering which will focus in the short term on New Zealand and is intended to grow to incorporate other Jetstar ski markets like Japan in the future.

Canterbury’s Mt Hutt Ski region is one of the New Zealand’s premier snow sport destinations. Mt Hutt is particularly family and beginner friendly with a snow sports school and a licensed Skiwiland Creche.

Pacific Blue takes Embraer E-JET on regional tour

One of Virgin Blue Group’s newest aircraft, a 104-seat Pacific Blue branded Embraer 190 E-Jet, will touch down around New Zealand this week as part of a tour to road test the aircraft in New Zealand, familiarise Pacific Blue staff with the jet and gauge feedback on suitability for potential operations.

Pacific Blue has been operating its 180-seat Boeing 737-800 jets on the main trunk domestic routes in New Zealand for nearly 18 months and said there remained “other tempting opportunities to introduce further competition”.

Jetstar to expand domestic and international aircraft and crew new bases

Australia’s low fares Jetstar Airways is to expand its domestic and international aircraft and crew bases to build a platform for its next phase of growth into Asia.


Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Bruce Buchanan said the announcement included four new or expanded crew bases, which would allow the airline to continue to maintain its low fares leadership.


Mr Buchanan said both the growth and realignment of Jetstar aircraft bases and associated pilot, cabin crew and engineering resources would see existing capacity and frequencies maintained, whilst better supporting the airline’s current flying operations and next growth phase.
