The weekly update on new routes and services

Hi guys. Alas, the Easter holiday is over! Back to the daily business. As usually, we start off with our weekly preview of the latest developments in the world of aviation – new routes, new services as well as other news from the low-cost airlines and traditional carriers.

We begin in Eastern Europe where the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air has opened its new base in Vilnius. Altogether, the carrier will operate 8 routes from there: VilniusBarcelona, Vilnius London Luton as well as Doncaster, Cork, Milan Bergamo, Rome, Eindhoven and Stockholm.

Flydubai launches three new routes to Karachi, Irbid and Colombo

Low cost airline Flydubai announced that it would launch new routes from Dubai Airport (DXB) to three new destinations: Karachi, Irbid and Colombo. This means Flydubai expands its route network to 22 cities.

All three cities have been strategically chosen by Flydubai and priced so as to allow more people to travel more often. Fares for flights to Erbil start at from AED 1,225, one-way flights to Colombo can be booked from AED 450 and flights from Dubai to Karachi are available from AED 300.

flydubai: first appearance at the Dubai Airshow

Dubai’s first low cost airline flydubai has hailed the 2009 Dubai Airshow as a resounding success and has vowed to be back at the next Show in two years’ time.

The highlight of the show for flydubai was undoubtedly the visit to the airline’s newest Boeing 737-800 aircraft by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai on the show’s opening day.

flydubai starts service to Sudanese capital

Dubai’s first low cost airline flydubai celebrated its eighth inaugural flight in less than six months last night when the airline’s first flight to Sudan touched down at Khartoum International Airport.

FZ631 left Dubai International Airport‘s Terminal 2 at 1845hrs on Sunday, November 8, and arrived in the Sudanese capital at 2150hrs local time, where flydubai’s CEO, Ghaith Al Ghaith was welcomed by a Sudanese delegation to commemorate the first flydubai flight between the two cities.

flydubai spreads network south to Sudan

Dubai’s first low cost airline flydubai is to start daily flights to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, with effect from Sunday, November 8. flydubai’s eighth destination, Khartoum, which sits at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles, is a rapidly growing economy. Well known for its oil trade, the country also boasts growing printing, glass manufacturing, food processing and textile businesses.

At a distance of 1,600 miles from Dubai to Khartoum, this flight will be the longest in flydubai’s network, but the airline is keeping fares low with prices starting from just AED 325 one way, which includes all taxes and one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 10kg. Tickets are available for purchase from the website (flydubai.com), call centre (+971-4-301-0800) and travel agents.

flydubai’s fleet continues to grow

Dubai’s first low cost airline flydubai has become one of the worlds’ fastest growing start-up airlines, with the delivery of its fifth aircraft in five months.

The Boeing 737-800NG is part of the historic order of 50 aircraft that flydubai placed with the American plane maker at the Farnborough Airshow last year and is financed by the US$320 million sale and leaseback deal recently announced with GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS). The new aircraft was immediately be put into service on flydubai’s first GCC route, Doha, with the first flight being on Sunday, October 18, 2009.

flydubai adds extra flights to Beirut

Dubai’s first low cost airline flydubai will give a boost to one of its busiest routes this Eid Al Fitr with the announcement of extra flights to Beirut. To accommodate anticipated heavy demand, flydubai has scheduled additional flights on September 17, 18, 19 and 25 departing from Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 2 at 7.40pm and arriving in Beirut at 10.15pm (local time).

For passengers wanting to travel to Dubai the return flight will take off from Rafic Hariri International Airport, Beirut, at 11pm (local time), arriving in Dubai at 3.20am.
